Okay, I have a confession to make. Today is my birthday. And no, I am not telling you how old I am. Except to say that I haven’t hit 40. Yet.
Telling people who don’t know it’s your birthday when it is your birthday feels vaguely like bragging. It is so much easier to make a fuss over your kids and family members’ birthdays and buy extravagant gifts for your husband that he never uses.
Speaking of husbands, what’s the best present you’ve ever got from yours?
Mine was a camperized van. He bought it for me so I could haul my horses to events all over the countryside and yet still have some of the comforts of home. He also bought me a computer way back in 1996. Sweet.
Some other of the more memorable gifts I have received from my husband include: a muffler, a furnace fan, a bumper, a horse trailer, a horse and a ridiculous set of car headrest covers made of Disney characters that looked suspiciously like they’d been bought at the nearest gas station.
But birthdays aren’t all about the presents.
Unless you’re my 3 year-old.
No, I think birthdays are a great way to pause in our insanely busy work-at-home lives and look around and appreciate all that we have. I am appreciative of my family and my supportive friends. I am appreciative of my health and a lifestyle that allows me to work from home and spend more time with my children.
And lastly, I am hugely grateful for my Mom. She usually shares her birthday with me, as hers is just two days before mine. Sadly, this is our family’s first year without her. My Mom taught me so many things and was such an inspiration, and I miss her desperately. Thank you, Mom.
So, will you take a minute today to pause and think what are you grateful for? Please share what comes to mind in the Comments section below. We’d love to hear from our fellow WAHMs on this topic.

I too just celebrated my birthday; and I too have not hit 40 yet. This birthday made me take stock in what I have and I am a pretty lucky gal. I am darn lucky to be a WAHM so that I can be home when my family needs me especially when my child is sick; that happened just this week and I was so happy to be able to just let him sleep the morning away and not cart him to a neighbour’s house so I could make a commute to work; plus I like being nurse Mommy and tending to him – that’s my job.
In general I am very grateful for all that I have. Life has never been sweeter.
