As a Virtual Assistant and WAHM, I find it effortless to stay in the comfort of my home and get sucked in by the online world. Don’t get me wrong, I love the new friends and colleagues I have met through the various VA forums, membership sites and social media avenues I log into each day. But it’s all too easy to succumb to cabin fever and never venture out of the house and beyond your Internet cottage. The people who say Twitter is “lame” were not at the latest Victoria, BC Twestival held at an exclusive Scottish pub, the perfect venue for a Twestival I might add. As a networking tool, Twitter has the ability to bring together tweeters, raise money online and then celebrate in person offline, all for a worthy cause.
Since being involved in Twestival I have met:
- A couple of real estate agents
- A whack of students
- A hoard of internet marketers
- A gaggle of retail owners
- And a whole lot more
2) Join a Meet Up (or “TweetUp”) Group
Check out Meet Up.com if you have a chance. Their tag line sums up what this site is about: “Do something • Learn something •Share something • Change something.”
Meet Up groups bring together people interested in a certain topic within your geographical location. I found one in my area called Business Moms Meetup Group. (How perfect is that for WAHMs?) And if you don’t find one that is to your linking, start your own group and watch your network build.

Well gosh darn, I need to figure out how to find out about the tweet ups more. I’m just south of Seattle and travel to visit family in Tsawwassen, I know many in Vancouver that I’ve never “met”. With it only being a couple of hours drive it frustrates me not to meet so many I chat with online.
It is very easy to hole-up and not talk face-to-face. I wouldn’t trade my online connections and friends for the world, but it’s also very healthy to get out there and connect with more than a user name or email addy
Thanks for the post!
Great advice! I am finding it overwhelming trying to learn about social media online…at every corner there seems to be a hundred different roads to walk down. All the hours in the day are not enough to explore everything that “needs” to be checked out.
Looking for some local #yyj opportunities to network and learn from people in “real-life” would probably be much healthier. For me and my Littlest Helper!
Thanks for the reminder!
